The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a qualified professional to work as a Correction Officer/Boiler Room Engineer (“Engineer”) to work in the Engineering department at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA. The work schedule for this position is Sunday through Thursday with an eight (8) hour flex shift between the hours 9:00p.m. to 9:00a.m. The days off for this position are Friday and Saturday. The hours and days off are subject to change at the discretion of Management and the needs of the Engineering department. Under direct supervision of the Senior Correction Officer (Sergeant) or other employees of higher grade, the Engineer will be responsible for monitoring, assessing and responding to alarms, maintaining and operating all boilers, furnaces and auxiliary boiler equipment, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers and other similar mechanical items. This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500).
Additional duties and responsibilities of the Engineer include, but are not limited, to:
Working Conditions:
Work in a correctional facility; working on weekends, nights, holidays and subject to being forced to work over eight (8) hours depending on operational needs. May encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders; may be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; work alone in an isolated area; lift and carry heavy objects; restrain inmates/detainees in accordance with policy. May also work under exposure to adverse weather conditions.
The individual selected for the position of Correction Officer/Boiler Room Engineer shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules regarding safety and security.
Qualifications:
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Must have an active valid driver’s license, the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts, an acceptable driving record and ability to pass a criminal background check.
Salary: Starting salary range is $76,800.38 to $79,920.38 plus additional incentives, bonuses and employment benefits. provided through a collective bargaining agreement. Additional duties and responsibilities of the Engineer include, but are not limited, to:
- Maintaining start and stop generators and synchronize them on switch board;
- Reading gauges, adjusting equipment and observing the operation of all machinery;
- Monitoring, operating and repairing the MSO’s heating and cooling systems;
- Maintaining electronic and physical logs for gauge reading, fuel consumed and similar data;
- When necessary, patrols facility; makes rounds and takes head counts; observes conduct and behavior of inmates, noting significant behavioral patterns; prevents disturbances; notes and investigates suspicious inmate behavior, including the possibility of contraband, by searching individuals, vehicles, mail, packages, and inmate quarters; develops working relationships with inmates by referring individuals to appropriate supportive services, as needed, to aid in rehabilitation; prepares reports relative to fires, disturbances, accidents, security breaches, and monthly evaluations on inmates; accounts for inmate whereabouts; may function as a Line Operational Officer as needed; enforces regulations pertaining to meals, recreation, shakedowns, showers, visits, key control, and inmate movement; assists in the training of new Officers; will be required to work mandatory overtime based on operational needs; must have the flexibility to work on multiple shifts as required; and performs other related work as required;
- Performing and/or assist in other duties as required by MSO management.

Qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) years boiler room/engineering field experience preferred; Correctional setting experience is also preferred;
- Valid 1st or 2nd Class Fireman License or higher issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is required. Maintaining of such license in good standing is also required;
- Graduate from high school or possess a GED equivalency certificate;
- Ability to attend a thirteen-week MSO Correction Officer/Basic Training Academy at the discretion of MSO management;
- Strong knowledge of electricity, plumbing, steam fittings, and all mechanical entities in a boiler room/engineering setting, experience with Building Management Systems is a plus;
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 70 lbs.;
- Strong written and communication skills, ability to keep accurate records and generate timely reports as required;
- Maintain the yearly training standard as required by the MSO; ability to attend any other training as required by the department.
